Mapping the Jungian Psychological Parameters of the Cinematic Archetypes
The in-birthed "NATURE"
1. The BIOLOGICAL NATURE of the ARCHETYPE
This is the 'genetic intelligence' or pattern of thinking preferred by the archetype in neurological processing –- especially in reference to critical-time thinking.
2. The INTROVERTED or the EXTROVERTED and the Neurological Patterns found within the Brain
These are the two opposite patterns of functionality in Jungian Psychology. Their labels refer to the late 1800’s semantic definition of “outward” or “inward” in proprietary thinking and NOT the modern day slang meaning "shy" or "bold".
In his work in clinical psychology, Dr. Carl G. Jung (the famous protégé of Dr. Sigmund Freud) identified the first priority of human thought as either introverted (inward) or extroverted (outward). He established that these two opposite patterns existed as separate, inbirthed conditions and that all persons are specifically predisposed to the maintenance of one of these patterns as their foremost function in critical thought and behavior.
Recent scientific discoveries have detected a biological pattern of brain cells in both hemispheres of the human brain by which humans are capable of formulating opposing patterns of mental, emotional, social, and physical self-expression. The activation of these cells has also proven to create patterns of facial and torso muscle articulations corresponding to the quantum binary continuum (QBC) divisions of Jungian psychological functions as certified by the Mind/Brain Dominance Inventory (MBDI). (The complex orthogonal matrix [COM] divisions of older Myers/Briggs Temperament Inventory [MBTI] methodologies are more or less invalid for this new application.)
These myo-electric, psycho-physiological indicators are the inciters of audience responsiveness to Jungian QBC formulations in cinematic archetypes and are the outlines by which CFI™ identifies actor and storyline archetypes and their accompanying behavioral protocols.
The biological extroverted or introverted nature of a human being is fixed and unchangeable -- but the other psychological functions are flexible. Once a determination has been made through biometric software as to whether the subject was born extroverted or introverted, the next step in the archetyping process is to establish how other behavioral priorities have been nurtured, indoctrinated, conditioned, or trained into the subject - and then evaluate the graphic appearances that they present to the audience.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
3. PERCEIVING - The Perception Group
Jung identified four additional designs in human thought patterns related to the extroverted and introverted priorities that are moldable and malleable functions.
The next two priorities in Jungian QBC order originate either outside (sensing) or inside (feeling) the physical body. Sensing originates from objects outside the body, while Feeling originates from subjects inside the body.
Even though both function types are fashionably identified in the Perception group classification, they are opposite distinctions of archetype. Because all people perceive one way or the other … perception itself is not a behavioral or archetype indicator and it should not be confused as a distinct type of psychological function (as it has been in Myers-Briggs Temperament Inventory typologies).
The Patterns of SENSING and FEELING in Perceptual Functions
a. SENSING --
A perception from outside the body, opposite of any internalized feelings, that present a pattern of outside inputs through the receptive nervous system which are the primal or 'causal' action in the psychological process.
In the True-Hero or Introverted Archetype, the SENSES are perceived in a Positive (or constructive) sub-priority.
In the Extroverted or Anti-Hero Archetype, these SENSES are perceived in an opposite or Negative (deconstructive) sub-priority.
b. FEELING --
A perception from inside the body which presents patterns of outputs which are interpretations of senses received from external sources and are the secondary or 'effect' reaction in the psychological process.
In the True Hero or Introverted Archetype, these FEELINGS are perceived as a Flexible sub-priority.
In the Extroverted or Anti-Hero Archetype, these FEELINGS are perceived as an opposite or Rigid sub-priority.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
4. JUDGING - The Judgment Group
Jung identified two additional sub-priorities in human thought programming with extroverted and introverted designs which result from the previous bodily sensation and feeling.
These two priorities are (A) the discovery of preconscious or accidental activity neurologically associated with areas located deep inside the brain called 'intuition', or (B) the consciousness and purposeful delegation of activity neurologically associated with areas used in the outer cortex of a brain called 'thinking'.
The Patterns of Intuition and Thinking in the Inbirthed NATURE
a. INTUITION --
These are judgments from inner regions of the brain that present a pattern of thoughts which are primal or causal interpretation of outside bodily senses previously perceived through sensing.
In the True-Hero or Introverted Archetype, the intuitions are judged in a 'Passive' sub-priority.
In the Extroverted or Anti-Hero Archetype, these intuitions are perceived in an opposite or 'Aggressive' sub-priority.
Intuition provides only two opposite possibilities which are either, (A) the awareness of moreness or (B) the awareness of less than moreness.
b. THINKING --
This is judgment from the outer region of the brain that presents patterns of thoughts which are reactive or of a secondary effect in the psychological process.
In the True-Hero or Introverted Archetype, this thinking is perceived as the 'Others oriented' sub-priority.
In the Extroverted or Anti-Hero Archetype, this thinking is perceived as an opposite or 'Self oriented' sub-priority.
Thinking provides only two opposite possibilities. The first pattern in any thinking will always be about either (A) self or (B) others.
These are the essences or qualities you are born with. One quality in each pair of opposites is 'dominant' and will remain pre-dominant until your death. The other qualities are sub-dominant. Variations on the inbirthed natures can be developed during the process of 'nurturing'.
Even though both the intuition and thinking function types are fashionably identified in the Judgment group classification, they are opposite distinctions of archetype. Because all people judge one way or the other … judgment itself is not a behavioral or archetype indicator and it should not be confused as a distinct type of psychological function (as it has been in Myers-Briggs Temperament Inventory typologies).
The born-out "NURTURE"
The ‘Environmental’ Programming born-out through adolescence by every Archetype
5. VARIATIONS in NURTURING
While experiencing the formal input, or concrete and informal output, or abstract phases of adolescent psychological development (during infant indoctrination, childhood conditioning, or teenage training), humans are entertained and educated by primary caretakers displaying combined examples of Extroversion and Introversion.
Those educators and entertainers bring with them their Extro or Intro inbirthed dominance -- along with their pre-dominant perceptual or judging capacities -- and then, present their young with multiple examples of sensing, feeling, intuition, and thought.
This random patterning creates a simple majority of extroverted influences or introverted influences in the adolescent’s environment. Because young human beings first respond to the most frightening of the six psycho-functions, the adolescent develops a pattern of INTUITION related in either a positive or negative fashion to its most influential example. This interaction nurtures additional psychological qualities onto the inborn nature inside the adolescent.
The interaction of the FEELING function in either 'extro' or 'intro' examples occurs next (second) in the development of the adolescent and will assist in creating four variants of nature and nurturing. These four variants prescribe the four basic archetypes in human existence. They are (1) Extroversive nurturing of an inborn Extrovert or (2) Introversive nurturing of an inborn Extrovert or (3) Extroversive nurturing of an inborn Introvert or (4) Introversive nurturing of an inborn Introvert.
6. The COMBINATIONS of NATURE and NURTURE
Qualities of the Perception and Judgment priorities are divided equally into those which can be learned … and those which are inherent.
SENSING (Perception) and THINKING (Judgment) are inherently uninterruptible qualities which cannot be orchestrated or programmed with interactive reasoning or pattern manipulation.
How you SENSE and how you THINK are a constant. Try THINKING slower. Try to think faster. Try to think less. Try to think judgment better. Try to think judgment like someone else without thinking judgment like yourself trying to think judgment like someone else … it's impossible.
It's the same with the SENSING perception. It can't be re-trained. The body's nervous system absorbing data from outside of your body continues to act according to its biological healthiness. (Your awareness of your sensing can increase or decrease through intuition or feelings -- but sensing by itself is a constant.)
Because FEELING (Perception) and INTUITION (Judgment) are quantifiable human constructions which are readily manipulated or replaceable with other variations of their theme, feeling and intuition are the only two psychological functions which are affected by environmental or primary caretaker nurturing.
When nurturing matches the nature of the adolescent, it is considered “type” training. In which case, the 'flexible' (Feeling) and 'passive' (Intuition) sub-priorities of the Introvert -- or the 'rigid' (Feeling) and 'aggressive' (Intuition) sub-priorities of the Extrovert -- are consistent and compatible with their archetypes.
When nurturing opposes the nature of the adolescent, it is considered “counter” training. In this case, the 'flexible' (Feeling) and 'passive' (Intuition) sub-priorities in the Introvert are replaced by 'RIGID' (Feeling) or 'AGGRESSIVE' (Intuition) sub-priorities, and the 'rigid' (Feeling) and 'aggressive' (Intuition) sub-priorities in the Extrovert are replaced by 'FLEXIBLE' (Feeling) or 'PASSIVE' (Intuition) sub-priorities.
(When, in the rare circumstance, the nurturing of the adolescent is divided into two separate and opposing environments which use similar amounts of time constructing the nurturing, it is referred to as “cross” training. In that case, the sub-priority qualities are not replaced, but are compressed and fight for casual-time to create the most comfortable thought-pattern based on situational determination.)
c. The 'RATIONAL' and 'IRRATIONAL' Archetypes
If the adolescent nurturing matches the inborn nature of the adolescent, it will achieve what Dr. Jung termed “rational”. If the nurturing is counter to the inbirthed nature, it will create what Jung termed “irrational”. Screen archetypes with these matching or opposing functions are identifiable in the same way.
In the case of an Introvert receiving IRRATIONAL nurturing, the qualities of Feeling and/or Intuiting like an Introvert (flexible/passive) have been overpowered to some degree by various quantities of Extroverted Feeling and/or Intuiting (rigid/aggressive).
In the case of an Extrovert receiving IRRATIONAL nurturing, the qualities of Feeling and/or Thinking like an Extrovert (rigid/aggressive) have been overpowered to some degree by quantities of Introverted Feeling and/or Thinking (flexible/passive).
d. ARCHETYPE ESSENCES in BASIC COMBINATIONS
Different varieties of archetypal attribute and attitude are created by the combinations of different Extroverted and/or Introverted Sensations, Feelings, Intuitions, and Thinking as nurtured into each individual. These combinations are called 'essences'. They are adverbs or adjectives that describe the generalized personable qualities of the archetype. They are accessible and identifiable through audience response profiles and evaluations exclusively available from CFI™.
Audience response profiling provides the individual educator or entertainer with delineated evaluations and explanations of the attributes or imageries expected by the target audiences of the subject who wishes to more charismatically inspire or instruct.
e. ARCHETYPICAL CHARACTER/ROLE CATEGORIES
Archetypal personalities are defined by combinations of archetypal essences. These essences combine to construct imagery or appearances that suggest certain attributes specific to character's personalities or player's roles within cinema and/or literature.
f. The 4 Basic CINEMATIC ARCHETYPES
The four cinematic archetypes are a result of combinations of nature and nurture. They are the naturally nurtured Great True-Hero, the irrationally nurtured Weak True-Hero, the irrationally nurtured Nice Anti-Hero and the naturally nurtured Great Anti-Hero.
When a talent is aware of its own archetype and plays it with the essences expected by its target audience -- the player cannot fail. Motion pictures with their cast organized by archetype appropriately -- has every human reason needed to succeed.
